The Framework

Academic ESL Hub is built to help students and teachers understand whether a learner is ready for university-level English — and what to improve next.

What This Site Actually Does

In simple terms, Academic ESL Hub provides diagnostic tools that measure three things that matter most for academic success: reading speed, vocabulary knowledge, and test-score alignment.

Instead of giving vague levels or generic practice, each tool explains what your result means in real academic contexts and offers practical guidance on how to move to the next level.

Reading Speed & Cognitive Load

University texts demand fast processing without loss of meaning. The Reading Speed tool measures effective words per minute while accounting for comprehension, not just speed.

Vocabulary Thresholds

Research shows that readers need approximately 95–98% lexical coverage to read independently. The Vocabulary Estimator focuses on high-frequency academic vocabulary rather than everyday conversation words.

Test Scores & CEFR Alignment

Many students take one exam but need to understand how that score compares to another. The Score Matrix aligns IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, and OPIc scores with the CEFR framework.

All equivalencies are approximate and intended for guidance only. Always confirm requirements with your institution.

About the Researcher

Patrick Travers (PhD, Foreign Language Education) is an ESL educator and researcher based in Daegu, South Korea. His work focuses on how advanced ESL learners transition from standardized-test proficiency to true academic independence.

Academic ESL Hub translates current research in Second Language Acquisition into practical tools that students and teachers can actually use.
